| Any tips for cleaning the new Evolutions units. Do they have pressed aperture caps as well as the new Executives, or can the tip be unscrewed if a cleaning is needed and do it as you would clean a CNI unit ? I have never as of yet Needed to clean my CNI yet, as I use a dust cover/focusing-lens combo..and have not had to try the methods listed here, although to be able to unscrew the cap to clean the lens(or if need be replace it) makes more sense. I ask because I am also looking at all the pros and cons before buying my next unit..not sure if I would rather have an Executive or an Evolution. |

I have one of each of the new models(Pulsar, Exec and Evo). I plan on updating this sticky in the next day or so too include safe methods to clean the lens on them. The Pulsar's lens is a bit far down the aperture, so the method will be different then on the Evo or Exec. In any case where the lens or IR filter is right behind the aperture hole, a microfiber cloth over a q-tip should work. If you can't get the q-tip through the hole because of the cloth, then cut the head off and use the stalk (for lack of a better word) and wrap the cloth around it. The CNI models are easier to clean, but I will list what I believe to be the safest method (it may just be the q-tip stalk and cloth, will know soon). _________________ Cheers,

Do you know a brand named "Goo Gone"?
It's supposed to take off any greasy/sticky stuff.
Do you think I'll take the AR coating off lens?
I used it on my Homemade collimator lens when I messed up and wanted to take it apart. I still see a strong red reflection on the lens (same as before), do you think the AR coating is still there? _________________

Thanks for this guide, Athoul! I've not had my laser for long but after cleaning the laser, I can certainly see the difference - probably got dirty fast since I didn't have an ideal place to keep it protected: in a side pocket probably filled with lint and dust). I've decided to use a make-shift lens cap on my laser for the time being until I can get a dragon case or other protection cap for the lens, but until then, thanks again for this guide.

I just got my laser today, Phoenix, 75 mW, and now I have a regular dot with a narrow X going across the beam. I noticed some dust particles on the lens and is this just the dust or is my lens scratched?
EDIT: what the hell??
It's gone now.
Wait, now its back, whats going on? |

This could be a mode issue from the sound of it (as mentioned), email support@wickedlasers.com they will help you out. If it's dirt/dust then the cleaning methods listed above will work. _________________ Cheers,

Mode issues, which are mode shifts, in the case of these lasers is when the dot profile is not guasian and circular (TEM00). Mode shifts can occur when the laser is cold or too hot, or even if the batteries have become a bit to weak to properly power the pump diode.
As long as the dot is circular and gausian when the laser is on after a few second warm up period, it's not a problem. If the mode shift remains throughout operation even after a few second warm up period, it needs to be looked at.
Don't want to go off topic, but take a look around the safety thread as there's a few topics on mode posted. _________________ Cheers,
