Okay, so in my research lab, i have a infrared pulse laser. I need to focus the beam but the focal length is not important. I plan on just using a lens to focus it, i'm not sure, but i believe the focal length won't be the exact length of the advertised value from the lens manufacturer.

How would i go by finding this focal length? I was told there is a sort of paper that will help. I don't know the name.

I was also told to use thermal paper, are these the same paper used in retail store printers? Do i just light this up and let the laser burn through them and slowly narrow down where it is.

My laser spec:
1064 nm wavelength
380 mJ energy per pulse
3.5 ns pulse
10 Hz repetition rate.

I think thermal papers are the ones used for fax machines.

one way would be to use a webcam that has had the ir filter removed or a sony nightshot camera. you can always get someone to hold a piece of cardboard with some black tape around it or something and move it back and forth in front of the beam while you tweak it. as long as its like 200+mw it should make it smoke pretty much instantly

how are you going to see a nanosecond pulsed ir laser, even with a nightvision camera. He said the pulse length is 3.5 ns
