i just found out i could discharge my li-ion cr123a's by leaving them in the unplugged charger for a while.

i'm thinking it'll be ok to use li-ions in the spyder if i discharge them to 3.0v first...

Good idea. But, I guess ill sacrifice my Spyder as the guinnea pig for the full power rechargables experiment. I will let ya know if my Spyder starts to malfunction.

Hahahaha, yeah I wish. Honestly, it took me months to scrounge up dough for this thing. I am a full time student. I am too curious for my own good alot of the time. I disect anything I get my hands on..... Any way, I just put in a fresh batteries hot off the charger. They each read 4.1v. The laser frickin screeeeeeeeams. It beats out my modded aries hands down. Cuts tape in about half a sec. in one pass. Very, very hot beam. Im gonna leave it on for a while. I let you know what happens, if anything, to the Spyder.

I was just saying that I was too curious for my own good, and this proves it. The unit was over driven and fried the KTP crystal I assume. Well, I really asked for this so I cant be too pissed. Spyders cannot handle alot of stress. It beat my modded aries, but only briefly. The Aries is winner by default. Ill have to post the results in the Aries vs. Spyder topic.

Yeah, all the light comes out, there is a coherent beam along with a large protrusion off to one side and fuzzy spackling of light all over the place. Its bad.

Ouch man :/ I wish you had pm'd me first! I would have told you that rechargables are not to be used Sad The output of the Spyder without rechargables according to your pictures was already higher then your Aries, you didn't need to try to squeeze out any more. As is, the diodes are not being over driven, but they are being driven at spec so an increase in voltage will over drive them. The rechargables would be ok if they didn;t have that initial 3.9+ voltage after a fresh charge.

Though this is not supported by Wicked, perhaps it's possible to incorporate a resistor in the battery housing to reduce the voltage to about 3.2V or less. Just a thought, but definatley not something that is supported by Wicked, this is a try at your own risk kind of thing.

So spyders are not to be powered by rechargeables???? (I'm soaking up all the info before I buy one in a couple of weeks)
