This is just a thread were we can talk about HeNe lasers, since they are so popular with many people here on the forums and the fact that they are found in many laboratories this seemed like a good place to put it.

Indeed you do Laser Ben, which one is your favorite and why?
I remember I almost won a 15mW HeNe 632.8nm laser, the price went too high for me at the time though, pitty, that would have been a nice laser to add to my collection.

I still like my pulsed one. The only HeNe that can burn, It's a Coherent prototype Q-switched model.
Other than that I like the 604nM due to the rarity. I have a 2 Brewster Tube I'm watching. I want that.
My interest started when I saw a 247mW red HeNe. 27 Feet long and had a square beam. Must have been a bitch to align!

It was at a local holography shop. I bought my 611nM one there. I believe it has gone out of business. I wonder what happened to the laser?

It's not expensive to make it's the gas mixture that's next to impossible to achieve, even with a Neon Sign shop doing it. They can lase on many different wavelengths but you're only going to get red on that you make.

Ben,
Don't you have a pure Ne pulsed laser? Does it work?
As for building a HeNe, the problem is that they require a High Vacuum, less then 1 Torr, which is difficult to achive without expensive Vacuum equipment, like ion diffusion pumps. If you are at a college or University with a good semiconductor manufacturing class they probably have the equipment, and if you take a class they may let you use it for something else.

The last site I found where you can get HeNe lasers is "meredith instruments". They look realy cool, but they are so expensive and hard to mount cause you need a power transformer. (you need 8000V to start, than 5000V) .
I found 25mW HeNe or a 2mW yellow (594.1nm) for 295$, maybe i'm gonna try the yellow baby... |
