I was just looking on Sam's Laser FAQs about dye lasers and how the dye can be obtained quite eaisly from a Sharpie.
Has anyone done this before? I've also noticed that the bottle of tonic water that has been sitting on my desk glows beutifully when hit with UV light (due to the Quinine in it) or my homemade blu-ray laser. Sam's guide also said that this could be a good dye to use.
And instead of using a flashlamp, could it be possible to use an array of high powered UV LEDs instead? |

UV lesd will by far have not enough power. That's why solid state lasers are laser diode pumped, not led pumped. Leds have a way too low intensity. Flashlampes or lasers to pump you dye will work the best.
Look at Sam's laser faq to the building of a pulsed nitrogen laser. It's easy if not the easiest to build and pulses in UV range. After that, build your dye laser. |
