The Lightscribe DVD burners should have 2 different lasers.
If it's used for burning on the disc's surface, it would be too strong to write files.

Are you planning to take apart the DVD burner to build a laser?
If you are, I suggest building a Blu-Ray laser instead, it would be more interesting.
Search for XBox 360 PHR-803t, there are some sellers that sell them for $40 USD, so it would be more reasonable to get that instead of a DVD burner, they usually power to over 100mW.

Well, the DVD burner I'm getting is only $40 USD. And while the blu-ray laser might be more interesting, it's more expensive. My goal is to get the most power for the smallest price.

Also, as for the simple current regulated driver circuit, where could I get that? I was planning on getting a laser from Wicked and just replacing the diode, like in the kipkay video. Could I get the simple current regulated driver circuit from Radio Shack?

And for the lightscibe laser, do you think I could use that? Or would it emit an invisible light?

And last question for now, I promise Very Happy , what current does the laser need to run?

On sam's laserfaq there are a lot of diode driver circuits, it just requires basic soldering skills, which are needed anyway. Taking a driver from another laser is a good option, at least if the driver can be adjusted and can take it to deliver the right current.

And be carefull, diodes have died from less than looking at them wrong. ESD and power on transients should be avoided.

After seeing another red laser I'm considering not building one as it is even cheaper. But, I can't find the batteries for it Sad . Any ideas where to get batteries for this laser?

EDIT: Never mind, it would have ended up costing me $120.

I found a place to order the micro drive, but they ask you to select an output current setting. What is that and what should I select?
