Yesterday, i got my 45 mw laser. After only 7 days wait Very Happy
It's power is phenomenal, it can burn through plastic bags, light matches, burst ballons etc Very Happy
My problem is that it can only do that when it is really close to the subjects. The beam seems to widen considerately when i use it over longer distances.
At 5 meters the beam diameter is about 1 centimeter, at 30 meters, the beam is about 5-6 centimeters in diameter.
I don't think that this is normal. I have a red 5 mw keychain laser, and it's beam does not change diameter at all when viewed at 30 meters.

What do i do? do i send it back, to get a replacement Question

Does anyone else have the same problem Question

That article is exactly what i used to compare with my own unit.
The picture of the dot at 0.8 mile shows a small dot. Mine would show a bigger spot.
What i don't know is if this is within the normal variance of the beam.

I became a member of WickedLasers before i ordered my unit. I could then use my phone number (in the order) as tracking number
This is the tracking homepage: http://www.ems.com.cn, You can find it in the FAQ page of WickedLasers.
I cannot tell you if it works, because my unit arrived within a week, so i did not track it.

READ THIS http://www.wickedlasers.com/WICKED.HTM DOES IT COMPARE TO YOUR LAZER, IS IT STRONGER, DOES IT WIDEN? I ALSO JUST BOUGHT A LAZER AND ITS BEEN A WEEK AND I HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANY TRACKING #S OR ANYTHING. DID YOU GET THE TRACKING # WHEN YOU BOUGHT YOUR LAZER, OR AN EMAIL?

The Tracking numbers are not working yet, after 2 day's you can email wickedlasers for a tracking number

i was just wondering if i could ask a question about beam divergence

the 15mw laser from wicked is good and the dot is a certain size

and i also have the 55mw wicked laser

but the dot is over twice the size at 2m and at about 200m its just HUGE, this takes away from the brighness of the laser

i have cleaned them and there is no pattern around the dot on either laser

why is the beam divergence so much more on the brighter laser?

It seems that i am not the only one that have a poorly focused laser.
Anyone else out there?

My 55mW has a beam shaped like the figure of 8 with two circular beams side by side; it's TEM01 - a less preferred laser mode.
At about 3m, the average dot size is 8mm when projected onto a black object, but significantly bigger if shone onto a light coloured object due to the glare from itself.

I don't think the lasers are poorly focused though; the increase in spot size is governed by its physical properties
"At 5 metres the beam diameter is about 1 centimetre, at 30 metres, the beam is about 5-6 centimetres in diameter." means the divergence is around 1.5mrad which is exactly Wicked's specs.

1. See my post 'Split beam' My beam looks like yours, except that it slowly changes from two circular beams to a short bar and back. It may be because the laser is heating up.

2. Yes, i have found that out now, it was just because i read the review for the 45 mw model on http://www.ledmuseum.org. The one Wicked Lasers quote themselves. There is some pictures of the beam af variuos distances, and at all times, the beam looks like a dot, not a bar. It may be because Wicked has sent a very well focused laser for review.

My beam shape does not change but sometimes the brightness drops a bit after about one minute or so on when the pen head is slightly warm. Most of the time the output is stable.

I checked the operating current from a pair of fully charged NiMH batteries and new alkaline batteries with a Fluke DMM set at 10A range and got readings of 510mA and 570mA respectively. The Wicked spec says <350mA!
The readings were confirmed with different ammeters.

I am wondering whether the new Advanced series use the same drive diodes as the Extreme series but with less efficient crystals to maintain the outputs at 45 and 55mW, and how this will affect the performance and life of the laser (apart from running down the batteries faster)?

Remember that the dot from the higher powered models is going to look much wider up close due to the brightness. Be sure to aim the lasers at a dark/black surface to determine the actual beam width. Of the numerous lasers I have received from Wicked, the dots/beams are circular.
