Is the yellow laser bright enough to use for astronomical pointing?

It's possible to use it for pinpointing stars but I do think you need a very powerful one..

The Keck Telescope in Hawai and the VLT in Chile both use a yellow/orange laser.. No idea which kind of wavelenght or power output it has.

Yea, that's one mighty laser. Ron Dantowitz setup an experiment once where they used a really powerful green laser, shot it up to the Shuttle in orbit and bounced it back down to the observatory. Insane.

I can't afford a laser like that. But it would be cool to have a yellow pointing laser. The photos I've seen are either longer exposures or just the dot is visible.

I'd like to know how much a yellow laser would cost that a beam could actually be seen in the night sky.

I'll likely just stick with the green or maybe someday get a blue. The other colors are intriguing though.

A 5mW yellow is probably visible, bt it's dim.

THAT is a dye laser. A DPSS laser of that power would need over 100W of pump power to even start lasing.

Holy crap those are some crazy looking lasers. They look insanely powerfull and the color is awesome, not to mention that the divergence seems to be virtually non-existing.
I'd like to know the specs off those lasers but i can't find any decent info on the lasers themselves the power is probably well in the watt range and divirgence like 0.1 mrad or something like that Smile
Anyway anybody got a cleu why they are using yellow instead off green or any other color for that matter?

They might be using a 589ish nm laser to hit a sodium transition in the upper atmosphere so they can see what is going on up there, they use that to learn about the atmosphere and then they can image it and use adaptive optics to correct for the atmospheric abberations.
